In the 1990s, as the government’s conflict with RENAMO began to show signs of winding down, South African entrepreneurs, especially farmers, began to sign land deals to begin commercial operations in such Mozambican provinces as Niassa and Gaza. By 2010 there were an estimated 800 such agricultural enterprises operating in the country.
