This page includes an audio recording. Normally, these pages include the full texts, organised year-by-year and as published primarily in contemporary Mozambican newspapers and magazines, of some of the speeches of the late President Samora Moisés Machel. For the texts of such speeches, please scroll down.
Below are links to three MP3 files that constitute the complete audio recording of an unpublished speech made by Samora Machel in Beira, at the football stadium of Ferroviário de Manga, on 14 June 1975, a few days before Mozambican independence. There is also a link to a recently-published English translation of that speech, and to an MP3 extract from the audio recording that deals with the behaviour of ‘the assimilado’.
The recording was originally made on a cassette recorder. It was digitised by MHN, and subsequently cleaned up and enhanced by the South African audio engineer David McLean, for whose expertise MHN is grateful.
This speech is the subject of a detailed analysis by Colin Darch and David Hedges in their article ‘Political Rhetoric in the Transition to Mozambican Independence: Samora Machel in Beira, June 1975’, Kronos available here.
The English translation was published with a brief introduction in the African Yearbook of Rhetoric vol.2, no.3 (2011), pages 67-83, and can be downloaded here.
A full Portuguese transcription of the speech together with an expanded analysis and commentary will be published in the forthcoming book by Darch and Hedges, Samora Machel: Retórica Política e Independência em Moçambique, Salvador: EdUFBa, in press.
Please note that MHN does NOT claim that this is by any means a complete collection of Machel's speeches and public utterances. Additional resources will be added to these pages from time to time. Any substantial additions will be announced on MHN's Facebook page.
