110. US State Department Reports Impact of War on Zimbabwe; SA Support for RENAMO is Ongoing

Above: One of the many victims of the conflict, this unidentified peasant woman received a non-fatal bullet wound to the head. Others were killed, deliberately mutilated, or injured by land-mines; millions were displaced from their homes.

Almost all the incidents of terrorism that led to Zimbabwe being ranked the seventh worst affected country in the world were raids by RENAMO across the Mozambican border, according to the US State Department's annual report.

Eyewitnesses of a nighttime massacre at Ressano Garcia in which ten civilians were killed testified that the RENAMO attackers arrived in a South African armoured vehicle, and that South African soldiers "lit up the area" with a large searchlight.

Two more Italian missionaries, Francesco Bortolotti and Camilio Campanella, were assassinated in a RENAMO attack about 20 km. outside Quelimane. In Liscon, a RENAMO spokesperson said the deaths were "accidental".
