107. Situation in Zambézia Worsens Again, While South African Support for Renamo Continues

Beira corridor, remains of a Renamo attack

A Portuguese priest was shot and killed in Cabo Delgado during an ambush on traffic between Pemba and Chiure. Another Portuguese citizen, a sailor who was abducted in August 1988, remained in the custody of the rebels.

The security situation in Zambézia worsened, with the MNR capturing Alto Molócuè during a new offensive. At least 32,000 children were reported to have been orphaned or abandoned in the province as a consequence of the fighting, and were suffering from shortages of both food and clothing.

Captured Renamo members and others continued to testify that South African military and logistical support to Renamo was ongoing, in clear violation of the Nkomati Accord and other later agreements.
