116. RENAMO Threats to Zambia and Zimbabwe Intensify

Joaquim Chissano

Above: President Joaquim Chissano speaking at a press conference. Chissano assumed the presidency at the height of the conflict and presided over dramatic changes in Mozambique, including the conclusion of the eventual peace agreement with Renamo.

Alex Shapi, the Zambian Secretary of State for Defence and Security, commented on several recent attacks by RENAMO groups crossing from Mozambique into the eastern part of the country. These included a raid on a hospital near Nyimba at the end of the month, in which four patients were killed with pangas, and six others wounded.

Meanwhile, in Zimbabwe, over 400 abductees taken by RENAMO in the last two years remained unaccounted for. Security was especially worrying in Mashonaland Central.

In what were described as "mopping-up" operations, the ZNA completely destroyed four RENAMO bases along the Zimbabwe-Mozambique border, capturing quantities of arrms and ammunitions and killing General Samuel. The fiercest of the engagements lasted for about five hours.
